Napa Valley Olive Oil Company

This Italian delicatessen has been a fixture in St Helena, California (The Napa Valley) for the 18 years that we have been going there and much longer before that.  No trip to the Napa Valley is complete with out bringing at least a case of Extra Virgin Olive oil home.  In our opinion, it is the best California olive oil.  Friends from Italy who have had it, compare it favorably with Tuscan oil.  Besides oil, there is a wide variety of cheeses, meats, beans, dried herbs, pastas, sauces, and vinegars.  If you like Italian food, miss the old Italian Delis of old and want great food sold by a really nice family......the Napa Valley Olive Oil Company is the place to go.  The address is 835 Charter Oak Street, St. Helena, California.  The phone number is (707)-963-4173.

ItalyStore

We recently made the "acquaintance" of Antonio Amendola who owns the ItalyStore site via the internet.  His site sells Italian food and non-food products.  We have corresponded with Mr. Amendola and asked him is he would consider discounts to anyone who ordered from him and mentioned The Artisan. He responded in the affirmative.

Consequently, we will list ItalyStore as a link to our site, and visitors to ItalyStore will receive a discount on items ordered. Just mention that you heard about the site here and Antonio Amendola will assist you.  Should you wish to  e-mail  Mr. Amendola, simply click on his name.

The Artisan does not receive any remuneration for providing this link. We live in a small city
where finding authentic Italian food is difficult at best, and impossible at times. The ItalyStore
should be able to help those of you in the same situation, or those who would rather shop online.

If any of you use ItalyStore to shop, please let us know about your experience.  The only way we can maintain quality resources is to hear from those who use them.

Ultra Lucca Delicatessen

We finally found an Italian Delicatessen which offers unique and very high quality products. For example, while reading Burton Anderson's "Treasures of the Italian Table" we were intrigued by  a very glowing review of Latini Pasta.  We had never seen it anywhere outside of Italy, but Ultra Lucca has it.

We are in  contact with a baker from Verona   (He sent The Artisan the Pan-Gris Mattino bread recipe you can find in the New Stuff section.) who has sent us a number of recipes which specifically call for Vialone Nano rice by Ferron.  He also told us we could find it at Ultra Lucca Delicatessen. We did .   This market has stores in Oakland, Berkeley and Corte Madera, California.  If you would like to know more about them, or wish to inquire about the products they carry, you can call or e-mail them. Press the E-Mail button to send them a message.

Morton & Basset Spices (M & B)

We found Morton and Basset Spices while trying to find black mustard seeds for a tapenade we wanted to make.  It is the tapenade served at an Italian restaurant in Los Angeles, C'a Brea.  No  spice company had exactly what we wanted, but M & B tried the hardest to match our needs. They succeeded admirably.  The contact person there is Tereas Takech, and she suggested that anyone trying to find M & B spices should call her.  She will research your needs, and try to find a retail outlet where you might be able to find what you need.  The telephone number is 1- 425-883-8530 and the Fax number is 1- 415- 883 - 0813.  Their mailing address is 32 Pamaron Way, Novato, CA. 94949.

Odyssey Culinary Provisions

Visitors to this site know how we feel about Latini pasta.  Frankly,if you live anywhere within 100 miles of a store selling this product,  and you consider yourself a pasta aficionado, go there to get it.  Before discovering Odyssey Culinary Provisions in Paso Robles, CA. (1214 Pine Street, 93446),  the only place we knew of to buy this, and other Italian products, was  Ultra Lucca (see above).   While not an Italian delicatessen, Odyssey owner John Hawley, seemed anxious to know about Italian products we thought important.   His cheese selection, while not large, includes a number of Italian cheeses such as Gorgonzola, Asiago, Umbriago and authentic Parmegiano Reggiano.  Odyssey Culinary Products can be reached by phone at (805) 237-7516 and by FAX at (805) 237-7514.   Watch for announcements here as new products from Italy are stocked.

The Artisan Pantry

The Artisan Pantry  features artisanal products imported from Italy. Some of their products include an excellent organic olive oil,   marrons glace, and the entire product line of a company in Italy called Goccia Umbra.  Goccia Umbra offers truffle and infused oils, pastas, honey and vegetable condiments. An interesting product  soon to be available from Orvieto is polenta infused with truffles.

The prices are reasonable, especially for products imported from Italy. We have tasted their Olio BeatoGocca_One.JPG (2032 bytes), and feel that it is excellent oil.   Compared to other imported oils, it is quite  reasonably priced at $17.99 a 750 ml bottle.  For more information about the products sold by this group, contact them at (718) -843-5844 for product or ordering information.  They can also be reached by email by clicking on the image to the left.
